Benedict Gross

Benedict Hyman (Dick) Gross of Solana Beach, California, died on December 19, 2025. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard, he received an M.Sc. from Oxford University and earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1978 at Harvard. After holding faculty positions at Princeton and Brown universities, he became a tenured professor at Harvard in 1985 and was named the Leverett Professor of Mathematics. He served as Dean of Harvard College from 2003 to 2007. Gross’ contributions to number theory, algebraic geometry, modular forms, and group representations earned him a MacArthur Fellowship in 1986. In 1987, he received the Cole Prize of the American Mathematical Society alongside Don Zagier and Dorian M. Goldfeld for their work formulating and proving the Gross-Zagier formula. He is survived by his wife Jill Mesirov and sons Isaac and Samuel as well as one grandson.
