Ramon Acevedo

November 17, 2016

On November 17th, Ramon Acevedo died unexpectedly at his apartment in New York City. According to Herb Eckhouse, “Ramon was loved by those of us who went through Harvard with him for his exceptional intellect, laugh out loud sense of humor, huge heart, and wisdom.”

Here is a short acknowledgment from one of his freshman roommates in Weld Hall 35, from Wilbur (Thirk) Edwards Jr.

I met Ray along with Herb Eckhouse and Jim Geocaris the first day of orientation week in Weld Hall. We were all public high school kids. Ray was from Franklin Square, Long Island, and proud of it. Ray got the biggest kick out of one of my middle names, which is Thirkield (and there is a story behind that) and somehow, he came up with my nickname of “Thirk” which stuck to me the next four years in Cambridge and ever since. We shared a room freshman year with bunk beds and many a morning at 7:45 A.M. we would have an existential discussion of whether we were going to class that morning. He usually won out and convinced me we needed our rest and should stay in. Ray introduced me to The Rascals, philosophy, meditation, his family and of course all his friends in the class. I am so sorry that we didn’t stay in touch over the years but I am thankful that I had him as a roommate along with Herb and Geo in 1967 and 1968. He leaves a lot of good memories with all of us. Rest peacefully my friend.
